[FoundingFathers.info editor's note: This old forum page has been archived. Click here for everything about the Gadsden snake and a page about recommendations on where to buy flags.]

: I'd like to purchase a Gadsden flag, but I'd like it to be the correct one. The flag on this site has a snake looking at the left side, with space between coils. Other versions are looking at the right side, and have no space between coils. Which is the correct flag? Same question for the culpeper flag, etc. As usual, there may be several "correct" answers, but then I'd like to know where the different versions come from.
: Cheers!

Hi,

As you suspect, there are several correct ones. And several incorrect ones. And ... it's hard to say whether one is "correct" or not.

In those days, flags were all handmade. Patriots saw a design they liked and imitated it. That's the origin of the wide variety of "Don't Tread on Me" flags.

However, you might be able to find an answer to what the snake looked like on Christopher Gadsden's own flag. He presented one to the South Carolina legislature, and I believe that it's preserved somewhere.

Good luck,

Chris

If the person posting this message left their e-mail address, we inserted some random characters to prevent spammers from harvesting their address. Spammers do this with automated "bots" that constantly search the Web looking for e-mail addresses. Since you're a human being, not a bot, you can easily obtain the real address by removing the text that says "ThisisToPreventSpam-XYZ-RemoveThis." including the random number XYZ and the period at the end. For example, <whitten@ThisIsToPreventSpam-123-RemoveThis.despammed.com> would become <chris-(@)-interesting.com>.
